Adi Ganga Tolly Nullah Tours

A Kalighat and Adi Ganga tour in Kolkata includes a visit to the sacred Kalighat Kali Temple, one of the city’s most revered Hindu shrines, along with an exploration of the historic Adi Ganga river.

In the 18th century, British officer William Tolly excavated and revived this ancient channel, primarily to boost trade. This initiative not only increased the river’s prominence but also spurred the growth of settlements along its banks.

Despite the devastation, Chand remains steadfast. It is his daughter-in-law, the newly widowed Behula, who takes it upon herself to journey to the heavens aboard a Gangaur, carrying her husband Lakhindar’s corpse. Her voyage along the Adi Ganga is not only an emotional odyssey but a reflection of the river’s vital role in trade, travel, and mythology. The story ends with Chand ultimately accepting Manasa as his deity—a symbolic triumph of indigenous beliefs over Aryan traditions. join with us Kalighat Adi Ganga Trail.

The earliest mention of Adi Ganga appears in the 15th-century Mansar Bhasan. Around 1570, Padmabati Devi of the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family had a divine vision and discovered Sati’s right toe at Kalikunda in Kalighat, making it one of the 51 Shakti Peeths. The area later became part of Dihi Panchannagram, a group of 55 villages bought by the East India Company in 1758 after the Battle of Plassey. These villages, once forested, gradually became part of Calcutta’s expanding suburbs. The current Kalighat temple, built in 1809 under Sabarna patronage, is about 200 years old, though the Halder family also claims ownership.
