Victoria Memorial Hall Kolkata
Nestled in lush gardens at the southern end of Kolkata’s Maidan, the Victoria Memorial is a grand white-marble monument dedicated to Queen Victoria. Proposed by Lord Curzon after her death in 1901, its foundation was laid in 1906 by the Prince of Wales and inaugurated in 1921 by the Duke of Windsor.
Designed by Sir William Emerson in Italian Renaissance style with hints of Mughal influence, the structure—often called the “Taj of the Raj”—spans 103m by 70m and rises to 56m, topped by a 5m-tall Italian-made bronze ‘Angel of Victory’. Built using Markana marble from Rajasthan by Martin & Co., it sits on 64 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens designed by Sir David Prain and Lord Redesdale.
Inside, the memorial features a museum with an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, and memorabilia related to Queen Victoria, the British Raj, and Indian freedom fighters. It also houses statues symbolizing virtues like Justice, Art, and Charity, all imported from Italy. Post-independence, the National Leader’s Gallery was added to honor India’s freedom struggle.
