The walking tour is centered along both the banks of Adi Ganga and covers several temple complexes with rich history and unique architecture.
Baro Rasbari at 78 Tollygunge Road, Kolkata, is one of the city’s most significant heritage temple complexes. Built by the Mondal zamindar family of Bawali in the early 19th century, the complex consists of eleven aatchala Shiva temples surrounding a large courtyard and a beautiful pancharatna temple dedicated to Gobindaji. The entire complex is recognized as a Grade-I Heritage Structure by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
The pancharatna temple was commissioned by Manik Mondal and completed in 1812, while the adjoining Madan Mohan Temple was later built by his son Uday Narayan Mondal in 1834. The temples were constructed on raised platforms beside the Adi Ganga to protect them from tidal waters.
A fascinating legend is associated with Gobindaji’s temple. More than a century ago, one of the Radha idols worshipped with Gobindaji was stolen. When the original idol could not be found, a new Radha idol was commissioned. Later, the thief reportedly lost his eyesight and confessed his crime, leading to the recovery of the original idol. Since then, Gobindaji has been worshipped with two nearly identical Radha idols, a unique feature of the temple.
