Kalighat Kali Temple, Kolkata: History & Timings
Kalighat Kali Temple is one of the most revered Shakti Peethas in India. According to Hindu tradition, the temple marks a sacred site where part of Goddess Sati’s body fell during Lord Shiva’s Rudra Tandava. Devotees consider Kalighat an important pilgrimage destination dedicated to Goddess Kali.
The temple stands near the historic Adi Ganga in south Kolkata. Raja Basanta Roy, the uncle of Pratapaditya, King of Jessore, is traditionally credited with building the original temple structure. The present temple complex features a sanctum sanctorum and a spacious hall known as the Nat Mandir.
A Shiva temple stands to the north-east of the main shrine. The complex also houses a shrine dedicated to Radha and Krishna. However, the main attraction remains the distinctive idol of Goddess Kali. The deity features a long, protruding golden tongue, which gives the image its unique appearance.
Kalighat attracts thousands of devotees throughout the year. Visitor numbers increase significantly during major festivals such as Kali Puja, Durga Puja, Poila Boishakh (Bengali New Year), and Sankranti.

Evening: 5:00 PM to 10:30 PM
The temple closes for a few hours in the afternoon before reopening for evening darshan. Timings may vary during festivals and special religious occasions.

Entry to Kalighat Kali Temple is free. Visitors do not need to purchase an admission ticket to enter the temple complex.
Devotees can make voluntary offerings and donations at designated points within the temple. If you plan to visit during a major festival, expect larger crowds and allow extra time for darshan.
